No Matter What Recovery Exec. Director Honored With Top Award For DEI Leadership

Mell McCracken, Executive Director of No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, has been awarded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Award by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals for her work in addiction and mental health treatment for the LGBTQ+ community.

-- LOS ANGELES, CA — Mell McCracken, Executive Director of No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, has been awarded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Champion Award by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP). The honor recognizes McCracken’s unwavering dedication to advancing equitable and inclusive recovery services—particularly for the LGBTQIA+ community.

A certified addiction treatment professional who uses they/them pronouns, McCracken has emerged as a respected leader in the fields of addiction recovery and mental health. Their expertise and advocacy have made them a sought-after speaker and trusted source for national media on topics ranging from gender identity and chemsex to homophobia and substance abuse.

“When I began my career in substance abuse and mental health treatment over a decade ago, I discovered—for the first time—a true passion and sense of purpose in my work. CCAPP was the first conference where I ever presented, so receiving this honor today feels like a full-circle and deeply humbling moment. My commitment to serving the LGBTQ+ community remains my guiding light, both as a clinician and as a fellow human being navigating this shared experience,” said McCracken.

“Mell is an amazing human being. I have known and worked alongside them for several years, and their charisma and commitment to this field make them the perfect recipient of the DEI Champion Award,” said Kristina Padilla, President of CCAPP, when presenting the honor.

Founded in 1972, CCAPP is California’s largest and longest-standing organization supporting addiction professionals and programs. The organization promotes excellence in addiction treatment by advancing advocacy, ethical standards, and professional competence statewide.

As Executive Director of No Matter What Recovery (NMWR), McCracken oversees clinical operations for the dual-diagnosis substance abuse and mental health treatment program that primarily serves the LGBTQ+ community. NMWR provides a safe and affirming environment for clients from diverse backgrounds who have faced challenges such as discrimination, social isolation, and rejection—factors that often contribute to mental health struggles and substance misuse. Studies show that LGBTQ adults are more than twice as likely as their heterosexual peers to use illicit drugs and nearly twice as likely to experience a substance use disorder.

To address these challenges, No Matter What Recovery offers a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Clients also participate in group sessions centered on trauma, relapse prevention, chemsex awareness, communication skills, and goal-setting. Currently, the program operates five sober living facilities in Los Angeles, housing up to 40 clients at a time, and will expand next year with the addition of a 12-bed detox facility.
