Bangkok, Thailand - September 1, 2026 - Issa Compass, a real-time visa platform operated by Singapore-based Issara Platforms Pte. Starting August 31, DTV applicants will generally only be able to apply from a country where they hold citizenship or permanent residence, and applications will require a certificate of criminal record clearance issued by the authorities of either the applicant's country of nationality or the country where the application is submitted. That restriction narrows where the 5-year multiple-entry visa can be filed. Royal Thai embassies announced the changes on their official channels, and the Thai eVisa system's full-day outage on August 30, from 00:00 to 23:59 hours (UTC+7), was to prepare the portal for the new rules taking effect the next day.
The changes were announced separately by individual Royal Thai embassies and consulates, including through their official Facebook pages, and coverage is uneven: not every embassy has published the update on its own channels, and the documentation accepted as proof of permanent residence differs between embassies, with some also requiring citizens to demonstrate active residence. The eVisa portal's outage notice, posted under an "Important Notice" heading, directs applicants with questions to the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in their own country during the downtime, and restates existing portal guidance: eVisa applicants no longer submit passports and supporting documents in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General, and applications may only be filed by people who are not currently in Thailand.
"Applicants who assumed they could file the DTV visa from wherever they happened to be are the ones most likely to get caught out by this change," said Priscilla Yeung, co-founder of Issa Compass. The DTV requires 500,000 THB held for at least the last three months of a six-month bank statement, a qualifying activity such as remote or freelance work, medical treatment, or enrollment in a Muay Thai or Thai culinary program, and, from August 31, a certificate of criminal record clearance. Because the visa can only be applied for from outside Thailand, applicants depend on the embassy in their country of citizenship or permanent residence accepting the filing, which makes confirming both the correct filing country and that embassy's specific documentation requirements immediately relevant to anyone planning to apply in the coming weeks.
